SCARRED

Occasionally, we are scarred with betrayal and disloyalty from the ones we’ve kept close to our hearts, making us build walls around our vulnerability and promising never to let our guard down.

Naomi and Sharon’s friendship story should be one that ties itself around the neck of this rancorous feeling.

Naomi and Sharon were sophomores. Sharon was a new transfer student; she transferred from her previous University after freshman year. But Naomi had already been there from the first year.

Sharon, a transfer student, who was still getting acquainted with the new environment; trying to adapt to changes, new beginnings, and also take on the weight of getting a good G. P (Grade point) that semester.

She was the typical calm, cool, and collected girl. She was uptight and always wanted everything to be in order.

On the other hand, Naomi was chaotic and feisty. She had a lackadaisical attitude towards her academics: this developed as a result of the coercion of her parents to study a course she had no interest in.

Naomi was a natural sucker for native art and culture. At age eleven, she had compiled a stack of books and documentaries that contained Africa’s earliest cultures and history.

These propagated her desire to study theater arts and film studies in the University. Unfortunately, all her aspirations fell flat when the parents gave an outright declination to her choice of course, leaving her in a dilemma tic state.

Fast-forward to the future, she was now a 200-level law student in the University. And She turned out to be Sharon’s roommate for the session. Sharon was also a 200-level theater arts student.

Sharon resumed for the session earlier than her roommate. She was eager to know whom her roommate will be because she considered it to be one of the factors that could influence or weaken her performance for the semester.

She had already encountered terrible roommates in her previous university and was hoping to have a nice roommate here. Her expectations were cut short when she meet Naomi.

Naomi gave a scornful look at Sharon the first time they met. She gave cold and direct answers to all Sharon’s questions about the school. Sharon didn’t take her coldness to heart; she just felt Naomi was being careful with strangers, and she was going to change with time.

One month into being roommates with Naomi, and her attitude towards Sharon never changed. She would complain and nag about the slightest mistakes of Sharon. Sharon detested the continuous confrontations that she would stay in her course mate’s room after lectures just to take a break from Naomi.

Sharon was gradually getting fed-up and decided to have a heart-felt conversation with Naomi concerning the issue. 30 minutes into the conversation and Naomi busted into tears saying she only acted

That way because she felt frustrated and helpless from her parent's incessant control over her life and decisions that she took it on the people around her.

Sharon was amazed that Naomi could be this soft and hearty. She truly understood why Naomi acted the way she did. Naomi apologized, and the girls settled their discrepancies with a hug.

Their relationship as roommates suddenly took a right-turn. The arguments and complaints ran off. Naomi seldom escorted Sharon to rehearsals and auditions.

Sharon noticed how Naomi gazed in amazement and enthusiasm whenever she watched their rehearsals. Hence,
she encouraged Naomi to take on auditions and acting roles in her spare time.

She said, ‘there’s no harm chasing two dreams; your parent’s and yours. You can delve fully into acting and film production after law school, by then you will be older, and your parents will have no choice than to let you be’.

Two sessions had pasted with their relationship still honing even after they had changed rooms and had stopped being roommates. Sharon was now in her final year, while Naomi in her penultimate. They were still juggling school work and attending auditions in their spare time.

Naomi met a man, Elvis, during one of the auditions she attended. He was the casting director. He fell in love with Naomi as he watched her embody the role she was to play.
Naomi and Elvis became fond of each other with time.

He changed the trajectory of her acting career; starring her in roles that featured popular celebrities.

Sharon felt sad and alone: watching Naomi’s life evolve while hers was still in the junk-drawer, she began to feed envy and hate for Naomi. This hate propelled her to plot the destruction of Naomi and Elvis’ relationship.

She intended to seduce Elvis during one of Naomi’s shoots outside the city. She appeared at Elvis apartment door, knocking; dressed seductively: with her hair sleeked down and her body snatch in a red, revealing gown.

Unknown to her, Sharon had called Elvis 1 hour earlier that she was headed home already because the rest of her shoots got cancelled.

Elvis innocently welcomed Sharon in and entertained her with a glass of red wine. Sharon started carrying on her dubious plan by pushing a perplexed Elvis on the sofa, struggling to have her way with him.

Naomi had gotten home already, but decided not to knock because she already had her keys with her. She stood in shock, watching her ‘supposed’ best friend trying to have her way with her boyfriend.

She quickly got out of her shock and discarded the shameful Sharon out of her boyfriend’s apartment.
